In the digital realm, the term "blockchain" often surfaces alongside descriptors like "immutable" and "ledger." But what do these terms truly signify, and why is blockchain's immutability so crucial?


First, let's tackle "ledger." In the simplest terms, a ledger is a record-keeping system. In the context of blockchain, this ledger is digital and chronicles every transaction that transpires on the network. Each recorded transaction is transparent to all participants, promoting trust and accountability.

The word "immutable" translates to unchanging or unchangeable. When applied to blockchain, it signifies that once a transaction is recorded on this ledger, it becomes permanent. You can't alter, delete, or retroactively adjust it. This enduring nature of transactions arises from several factors.

Cryptographic Hash Functions

Each block (a set of transactions) in the chain possesses a unique code known as a hash. Additionally, it carries the hash of the preceding block, creating a linked chain. Altering a block would change its hash, breaking the linkage and alerting the network to potential foul play.

Decentralisation

Unlike centralized systems where a single entity holds authority, blockchain records are spread across a vast network of computers (nodes). To modify a transaction, more than half of these nodes must agree to the change, a feat nearly impossible to achieve without detection.

Consensus Mechanisms

Before adding a transaction to the blockchain, network participants must validate it. Common methods like Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) ensure that all additions to the blockchain are agreed upon, adding another layer of security.


When people refer to blockchain as an "immutable ledger," they're highlighting its powerful ability to maintain unalterable, transparent, and trustworthy records. In an era where data integrity is paramount, blockchain's immutability stands as one of its most compelling features.
